New Delhi, March 8 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday said farmers’ interests are paramount and they will be fully protected at all times, a statement issued here said.
Manmohan Singh, who met a Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) delegation consisting of Rakesh Tikait, also promised that he will soon convene a joint meeting with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar to discuss the farmers issue.
‘The prime minister reiterated the government’s deep concern for farmers welfare and assured that farmers’ interests are paramount and will be fully protected at all times,’ a statement issued by the prime minister’s office said here.
The prime minister also said every year, before the budget, the government brings out a report on the state of Indian agriculture.
Minister of State for Agriculture Arun Yadav was also present in the meeting.
Union leaders from Punjab, Uttarakhand, Haryana were also part of the delegation. They raised a number of issues, including remunerative prices for farm produce, amendment to the Land Acquisition Act, protecting the interests of Indian farmers and health insurance for farmers.
