Sharad Pawar condoles passing away of farmers’ leader Tikait

New Delhi, May 15: Union Agriculture Sharad Pawar has condoled the demise of Bharatiya Kisan Union President Mahendra Singh Tikait, who spearheaded several movements for peasants' rights in northern India.

In his condolence message, Pawar said: "I have learnt with shock and grief about the demise of Mahendra Singh Tikait. The interests of the farming community were close to the heart of the popular kisan leader and he always stood with the farmers on all issues concerning them."

"We will be deprived of his valuable advice and views on matters relating to agriculture. I pray to the almighty to give peace to the departed soul and give strength to his family to bear the irreparable loss," he added.

Tikait, who also served as the council head of Baliyan Khap, died in Muzaffarnagar this morning due to protracted illness.

His cremation will be held at the BKU headquarters in Sisauli on Monday
